The right type of breast replacement procedure for you depends on why you are replacing your breast implants. These are the different types of implant replacement surgery:

  • Breast implant replacement or breast re-augmentation – surgeons remove your original implants and replace them with new implants. The implants can be the same size, smaller (breast implant downsizing), bigger, or different.
  • Breast capsulectomy– capsular contracture can cause pain and distortion in a breast’s appearance. In a capsulectomy, the surgeon removes the capsule (abnormally thick, hardened tissue) formed around breast implants and either removes or replaces the breast implant.
  • En-bloccapsulectomy –an en bloc capsulectomy describes scar tissue capsule removal and comes from the French for ‘as a whole’ or ‘all together’. The surgeon removes the capsule and breast implant together while ensuring nothing inside the capsule gets out.
  • Breast implant removal with breast uplift (mastopexy) – your surgeon may suggest this combined procedure if your breast tissue has stretched due to childbirth, weight loss or natural ageing, altering your breasts’ size, shape and position. They will remove the breast implant and lift your nipple and breast back to their natural place.
  • Breast implant removal – the surgeon removes the breast implants without replacing them.
  • Fat-transfer (lipo-modelling) – in this technique, your surgeon removes your breast implants and injects fat via liposuction from other body areas such as the thigh or stomach to boost breast volume.

All operations involve some risk, but it’s relatively low in implant replacement surgery. Your surgeon will explain the risks and complications associated with your procedure in more detail during the consultation.

However, the possible complications of implant replacement surgery include infection, bleeding, abnormal scarring, seroma (fluid collection), capsular contracture, numbness, asymmetry, displacement, rupture, rippling, Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) and venous thromboembolism (VTE).

  • Breast implant rupture – although this is now rare, it can be a complication of breast augmentation surgery. Rupture means the implant shell breaks. Signs that your breast implant may have ruptured include breast shape and size changes, increasing pain and firmness, and swelling.
  • Capsular contracture – it’s normal for fibrous tissue to form around a breast implant to create a soft or slightly firm protective tissue capsule that keeps the implant in place. However, sometimes a hard, dense capsule can form, causing tightness around the implant and this is referred to as capsular contracture.
