neck lift

A rejuvenating neck lift slims and contours the neckline to give you a fresh, youthful look.

what are the benefits of a neck lift?

You can have a neck lift at any age. But it’s a particularly popular procedure with the over 45s because that’s when time, gravity and sun exposure begin to make the jaw sag and skin turn crepey.

At The Levant Clinic, neck lifts create a naturally younger you.

Neck lift benefits include:

  • A sharper, more defined jawline
  • Restored confidence and self-esteem
  • You feel younger and more youthful
  • Feeling fabulous in clothes with any neckline
  • Improved skin tone and elasticity
  • Smoother make-up application
  • Long-lasting, natural appearance

neck lift options

We can carry out neck lifts as single procedures, but we often combine them with facelifts, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and liposuction to enhance the result. In addition, some of our clients prefer to improve the ageing appearance of their necks with non-surgical wrinkle smoothing injectables and dermal fillers.

The type of neck lift or neck lift combination you choose depends on the results you want to achieve.

Neck lift procedures can include:

  • Neck lift – re-drapes and tightens excess skin (cervicoplasty) to improve poor neck definition, double chin and sagging skin. When slimmed, the neck muscles are tightened to reduce the appearance of undesirable neck banding (platysmaplasty)
  • Liposuction – removes excess fat
  • Wrinkle relaxing injections – addresses problems with fullness or bands
  • Dermal fillers – restore volume

neck lift surgery

We only select the most highly skilled facial plastic surgeons who are noted for achieving beautiful results.

at the hospital

Your neck lift will take place in a CQC-registered hospital. Your surgical team will get you ready for surgery.

Your surgeon will spend time with you before your neck lift, putting you at ease by answering any questions you may have. Then, pre-operation photographs will be taken, and your neck will be marked up and ready for surgery.

You will also see your anaesthetist before the procedure and can ask questions regarding your general anaesthetic.

neck lift – what happens?

A neck lift is always carried out under general anaesthetic and takes around two hours to perform, but longer when combined with a facelift. Our surgical techniques differ depending on the type of neck lift, but this is a general overview of what will happen:

Neck lift

  • Your surgeon makes small incisions under your chin and behind your ears to reach a neck muscle called the platysma, which is more prominent as we age
  • They lift the skin along the jawline and neck, removing any excess, before tightening the neck muscle (platysma) and skin across the whole neck area.
  • Your surgeon uses dissolvable stitches to close rather than staples.
  • Local anaesthetic to the neck area is also given to make you comfortable after the procedure.

liposuction

  • The surgeon makes a small cut beneath your chin and inserts a thin metal tube (cannula) into the treated area, and a liposuction machine sucks out the fat
  • They will drain the site and stitch it before applying dressings
  • A compression bandage or support garment is fitted.

non-surgical neck lifts

  • Anti-wrinkle injections can relax the parts of the platysma responsible for banding
  • Dermal fillers add volume to the neck area
  • Carried out as an outpatient
  • Complete in about 15 minutes.

after your neck lift

Everyone at The Levant Clinic believes your aftercare is as important as the procedure itself.

getting home

We will put you at ease by giving you post-operative advice before leaving the hospital. Our guidance ranges from medication information to physical activities, showering, and any relevant information your surgeon needs to tell you. You’ll be discharged the day after your procedure, and we recommend that a friend or family member takes you home, as you won’t be able to drive.

outstanding aftercare

Our expert team are proud of their personalised approach to looking after you and are the link between you and your surgeon.

  • You will remain under the direct care of your surgeon, with regular contact and support from our dedicated team
  • We don’t pass you to a nurse for follow-up care
  • We’ll give you a 24/7 telephone number to call for peace of mind
  • Our team can put you in touch with your surgeon directly at any time.

recovery timeline

Following your neck lift surgery, we will give you advice about your aftercare and recovery tailored for you as an individual. However, as a general guide, you can expect:
same day
  • You will stay in the hospital overnight
  • You can shower – our special wound closure technique that means you can shower straight away
  • We will apply light dressings
  • Compression garment – depending on your procedure, you may need to wear this for six weeks, except in the shower.
following day
  • Bandage removal – your surgeon will remove the heavier bandage dressing, leaving the lighter facial dressing in place
  • If you have had liposuction to the neck, your neck garment will stay in place for six weeks
  • You’ll be discharged from the hospital
  • Rest as much as you can.
first two weeks
  • You will wear light face and neck dressings for 10 days, which your surgeon will remove at your first follow-up consultation
  • It is usual to feel sore and tender after your neck lift, but we will reduce any discomfort by prescribing pain relief medication
  • You’ll have some swelling and bruising
  • We suggest sleeping on your back for the first couple of weeks, as this will help your recovery
  • We encourage you to mobilise as much as possible but suggest you avoid strenuous activity
  • You may feel more tired than usual, so it’s advisable to have someone assist you
  • You may want to take two weeks to recuperate before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour
  • A follow-up appointment with your surgeon.
two weeks and beyond
  • Neck lifts will usually take two weeks to heal, and you can expect some residual bruising
  • Your stitches will dissolve after around two weeks
  • You can stop wearing a liposuction compression garment after six weeks
  • You can return to driving when you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually from two weeks post-op
  • Short-haul flights can be taken after four weeks
  • Back to normal activities, including exercise at six weeks
  • Long-haul flight at six weeks
  • Your neck may feel tight for several months, but the feeling may gradually subside
  • You will notice a difference immediately, with full results seen from three months
  • Keep scars out of direct sunlight for 12 months.

You can exercise six weeks after your neck lift.

Most patients take two weeks to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.

You should wear the compression garment for six weeks, apart from in the shower or bath.

You can start driving once you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually about two weeks after the procedure.

You’ll need a week’s grace for any travel. We advise waiting four weeks before boarding a plane – and up to six weeks for a long-haul flight.

You’ll notice a difference immediately, but as your bruising and swelling reduce in the following weeks, the results will continue to improve. Your neck will appear younger, smoother, tauter, and significantly slimmer.

Scarring is usually minimal and hidden in the natural skin folds on your neck and jawline. They fade in time and become pale after 12 months.

before and after

“It is immeasurable what a difference it has made–my confidence has sky - rocketed, and I have a spring in my step and feel like I walk taller.”

frequently asked questions

All operations involve some risk, but neck lifts are relatively low risk when being carried out by a qualified plastic surgeon. However, there are possible complications with neck lift surgery.

They include bleeding beneath the skin (haematoma), numbness, infection, seroma (fluid collection), bruising, delayed healing, facial weakness and venous thromboembolism. Your surgeon will explain the complications associated with your operation in more detail during the consultation.

At The Levant Clinic, all our surgeons are accredited by the GMC and hold the FCRS (Plast) qualification. We take the utmost care to minimise any risks and complications.

We have partnered with Plim to offer tailored finance options that help you pay for your procedure – and we are clear about the costs of surgery at every stage.

Discover more about the finance options we offer.

In your first consultation, we learn about your goals and answer questions. We’ll discuss your concerns, find out your options and consider which approach to a neck lift will be most suitable for you.

It is always a good idea to have a list of questions you may want to ask in advance. But we understand that there’s often much to discuss, so if you forget to ask a question during the consultation, you can contact the Levant team, who can return to your surgeon and get the answer. Questions you may want to consider are:

  • Is a neck lift right for me?
  • What surgical technique do you recommend?
  • How long a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need as I recover?
  • How can I achieve the best results from my neck lift?
  • Do you have before and after photos I can look at for this procedure?

Although a neck lift cannot halt the ageing process, you will see an immediate effect. It will typically last 5-10 years, but every patient is different.

However, self-help like a daily skincare routine and healthy eating can help maintain your new neck lift’s effects. Various aesthetic, rejuvenating and cosmetic treatments can also help.

A neck lift creates a youthful, refreshed appearance that boosts your confidence and self-esteem because it removes and tightens your skin and reduces creases and banding to give you a more defined neckline and profile.

Neck lift surgery could be for you if you want to hide signs of ageing, such as loose, sagging skin (jowls) along the jawline and neck, neck bands and wrinkles.

You may want to consider a neck lift if:

  • Your neck is affecting your confidence
  • You have loose skin, wrinkles or folds in your neck
  • You would like a smooth, contoured jawline without jowls
  • You want to look more youthful and refreshed
  • You want to feel confident wearing clothes that show your neck

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you may be suitable for a neck lift.
