tummy tuck

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat, boosting your self-esteem with a flatter, firmer, more muscular stomach.

what are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery offers our male clients the abdominal tone they want. Today, more men are discovering the benefits of a tummy tuck contour:

  • Second chance to look slim
  • Firmer and flatter stomach
  • Improved core strength
  • Targets areas that exercise alone can’t change
  • Improved skin elasticity and body tone
  • Better muscle and definition
  • Clothes appear more flattering
  • Health benefits due to the removal of fat deposits
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Long-lasting results

what type of tummy tuck is best for me?

You can expect your tummy tuck result to look natural. Your surgeon will give you time to discuss the different types of tummy tuck and consider the best option for you; these may include:

  • Mini tummy tuck (mini-abdominoplasty) – A mini tummy tuck targets the skin and muscles below the belly button.
  • Full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) – You are a candidate for a full tummy tuck if you have excess skin and your shape has changed following weight loss. A full tummy tuck, also known as a traditional or standard tummy tuck, removes excess skin and fat and repairs torn muscles, giving you a flatter and firmer tummy.
  • Brazilian tummy tuck – This tummy tuck technique with liposuction may suit you to achieve a sculpted look. In a Brazilian tummy tuck, the surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat from the waist, abdomen, and flanks.
  • Fleur de Lis tummy tuck – The Fleur de Lis tummy tuck aims to remove large amounts of excess skin and fat from around the tummy. The surgeon makes one horizontal incision (hip bone to hip bone) and a vertical incision from the base of the rib cage to the pubic bone, where both incisions meet. It’s ideal for patients with significant amounts of excess skin and fat, as greater quantities can be removed.
  • Extended tummy tuck – The difference between an extended tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck is the incision made around the hips and back. It nips in the waist and back by removing excess skin and fat in those areas.

Competitively priced tummy tucks with expert plastic surgeons

We understand you will have many questions when you are thinking about tummy tuck surgery. Your first step is to meet one of our highly experienced consultant plastic surgeons. They will tell you about the procedure and put your mind at ease.

your surgeon will:

  • Assess your medical history
  • Ask about your aims and expectations
  • Gauge whether a tummy tuck is right for you
  • Discuss which technique they will use
  • Tell you about a tummy tuck’s potential risks and complications

you can expect:

  • An examination of your tummy, including the degree of muscle split (divarication) and presence of any hernias
  • Your questions to be answered, such as aftercare and the recovery process
  • Your surgeon to show you before and after photographs of their work
  • A clinic letter detailing your discussion with your surgeon and surgical plan

You will also hear about our pioneering wound closure technique. It means you can immediately shower, and the special dressings do not need to be changed for two weeks.

getting ready for your tummy tuck

Our highly experienced team support your tummy tuck journey.

pre-op assessments and advice

We will give you every opportunity to ask us questions before the procedure. Your pre-op meeting with your surgeon and regular contact with our expert term mean that you’ll be ready when your surgery day arrives.

Our preparation for your tummy tuck involves:

  • Information you need in the lead-up to your procedure.
  • Pre-operative assessments a week before your tummy tuck, including MRSA swabs.
  • Medication advice – we’ll advise you about potential interactions with the medications you are taking. Two weeks before surgery, we’ll ask you to stop taking any that increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and herbal medicines.
  • Smoking advice – you’ll need to stop smoking, using nicotine patches or gum at least four weeks before and after the procedure.

preparing for your hospital stay

We make your experience as easy and relaxed as possible.

Before your tummy tuck:

  • You won’t eat or drink for six hours before your procedure, except clear water
  • Arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital the following day.

what to bring with you on the day:

  • Any medication you are taking
  • Post-surgery support garment
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Something to read
  • Toiletries.

tummy tuck surgery

With a flatter, firmer and toned abdomen, your new shape can transform your confidence and esteem.

at the hospital

We will admit you to a CQC-registered hospital for your tummy tuck.

  • Your surgeon will be there to answer any concerns you have, take photographs, and mark up your body ready for surgery.
  • Your anaesthetist will also see you before the procedure so that you can ask them about the anaesthetic. As well as a general anaesthetic, we use a local anaesthetic infiltration to make you comfortable after your tummy tuck.

tummy tuck – what happens?

An abdominoplasty usually takes between two-three hours to perform. Your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat and repair any hernias and muscle splits (divarication). They will sculpt your belly button to give it a new shape and position.

At the procedure’s end, your surgeon will apply dressings and place you in a support (compression) garment.

We offer a full range of tummy tucks:

  • Mini tummy tuck (mini-abdominoplasty) – Our surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles below the navel. The incision is like a caesarean scar, and your belly button is not touched.
  • Full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) – During an abdominoplasty, our surgeon removes excess skin and fat from the pubic bone to the belly button, tightening the muscles above and below.
  • Brazilian tummy tuck – In a Brazilian tummy tuck, the surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat from the waist, abdomen, and flanks.
  • Fleur de Lis tummy tuck – A fleur de Lis tummy tuck involves removing more significant amounts of excess skin by making one horizontal incision to each hip bone, plus another vertical one from the base of the rib cage to the pubic bone where the incisions meet. It allows the surgeon to remove loose skin above, below, and on both sides.
  • Extended tummy tuck – The difference between an extended tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck is the incision made around the hips and back. It nips in the waist and back by removing excess skin and fat in those areas.

after your tummy tuck

We have a very personal approach in looking after you.

We will put you at ease by giving you post-operative advice before you leave the hospital. You’ll be discharged the day after your procedure, and we recommend that a friend or family member takes you home, as you won’t be able to drive.

recovery timeline

Our expert surgeons ensure minimal downtime and complications when carrying out your tummy tuck. We will give you tailored advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:
same day
  • You will stay in hospital overnight
  • Thanks to our unique wound closure technique you can shower straightaway.
following day
  • You’ll be discharged from hospital, most likely with a drain
  • Mobilise as much as you can.
first two weeks
  • How you will feel – it is usual to feel sore and tender after your tummy tuck, but the pain relief we prescribe will reduce any discomfort
  • Some bruising and swelling – over the treated areas
  • Drain is removed – three-five days after your tummy tuck
  • Sleeping – sleep on your back with your head elevated as this will help your recovery
  • Movement – we’ll encourage you to move about as much as possible, but suggest you avoid strenuous activity
  • Help with daily activities – you may feel more tired than usual, so it’s advisable to have someone assist you
  • Work – you may want to take two weeks to recuperate before returning to work, but this may be a little longer depending on your job
  • Follow-up appointment with your surgeon – at two weeks
two weeks and beyond
  • Healing – tummy tucks take about two weeks to heal
  • Stitches dissolve, so your stitches won’t need to be removed
  • Driving – when you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually from three weeks
  • Short-haul flights – after four weeks
  • Back to normal activities, including exercise – at six weeks
  • Compression (support) garment – wear for six weeks, except in the shower
  • Long-haul flight – at six weeks
  • Results – you will notice a difference immediately, but full results will be seen in three-six months
  • Follow-up appointments – the first year after your tummy tuck, your consultant surgeon will review you to monitor how you’re healing and recovering
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle – to ensure the results are permanent.

You can exercise six weeks after your tummy tuck.

Most patients take two weeks to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.

You should wear your post-op support garment for six weeks, apart from in the shower or bath.

You can start driving once you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually about three weeks after the procedure.

You’ll need a week’s grace for any travel. We advise waiting four weeks before boarding a plane – and up to six weeks for a long-haul flight.

You will notice a difference straight away but see the best results after the swelling has subsided. It can take 3-6 months to see the full effects of your tummy tuck.

You will have scars after surgery, but they will fade gradually over the first year. Depending on the technique, tummy tuck scars are positioned within or below the pant line.

before and after

“When I met Mr Jallali at my first consultation, I was immediately impressed with his approach and how helpful he was. He examined me and put me at ease when he said he could improve my body contour. I was thrilled. He treated me with respect and dignity.”

frequently asked questions

All operations involve some risk, but it’s relatively low in tummy tuck surgery.

Possible complications of tummy tuck surgery include infection, bleeding, abnormal scarring, seroma (fluid collection), loss of umbilicus, numbness and venous thromboembolism (VTE). Occasionally some excess skin and fat remain at the corners of the scars, often referred to as ‘dog ears’. Our surgeons can remove these under local anaesthetic when the scar has healed. Your surgeon will explain the potential risks and complications associated with your operation in more detail during the consultation.

At The Levant Clinic, all our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council and hold the FCRS (Plast) qualification. We take complete care to ensure any risks are minimised.

We have partnered with Plim to offer tailored finance options that help you pay for your procedure – and we are clear about the costs of surgery at every stage.

Find out more information about the finance options that we offer.

You’ll be given ample time to discuss your concerns, discover your options and consider the most suitable approach for you.

It helps to think about what you want to ask in advance and bring the list of questions with you. But if you do forget to ask something during the consultation, don’t worry – you can always contact our specialist team, who can get the answer direct from your surgeon. The questions you may want to consider are:

  • Is this procedure right for me?
  • What surgical technique is recommended for me?
  • What length of recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • How can I expect my tummy tuck to look over time?
  • What should I do to get the best results?
  • May I see some before and after photos for this procedure?

Having a tummy tuck is a very personal choice. After weight-loss, some men feel comfortable with their body shape, but for others, the skin and muscle changes can be upsetting and confidence destroying.

If you are looking for a permanent way to restore your body’s shape then a tummy tuck may be right for you. It can be an excellent way to:

  • remove excess, loose, or sagging skin
  • improve muscle and skin tone
  • remove stretch marks below the belly button
  • reduce fat deposits around your middle
  • improve elasticity of your skin
  • sculpt your body contours
  • have a more flattering look in clothes
  • improve your tummy confidence
