face lift

Feel confident and rejuvenated with a Face Lift, giving you a more youthful and fresher appearance.

what are the benefits of a face lift?

A facelift can transform how you look and feel. The increased confidence that comes with your new, naturally younger appearance and defined facial contour are the main reasons our clients consider a facelift.

The benefits of a facelift include:

  • Natural and more youthful contours
  • Rejuvenated appearance, making you look fresher
  • Improved volume in the face
  • Removal of loose skin, wrinkles or folds in your face caused by ageing
  • Reduction of jowls creating a smooth and firm jawline
  • Removal of excess skin from substantial weight loss
  • Easier to apply make-up
  • Boosted confidence

the different types of face lifts

There are several facelift techniques, and choosing the right one for you will depend on various important factors. In our experience, younger clients may be more suited to a mini facelift to address the early signs of loose skin. Our older clients may require a face and neck lift to tackle the greater loss of skin elasticity.

At The Levant Clinic, we offer the following facelifts:

  • Deep-plane facelift – the deep plane of the face is its supportive layer. Deep-plane surgery operates on this layer rather than just the skin, both above and below the jawline. It can be a great way to lift the tissues in the face without pulling the skin too tight, leaving you with a natural and refreshed look.
  • SMAS facelift – this surgery tackles the ageing of the lower and upper face and neck and is one of our most popular types of facelifts. It will remove fat and excess skin and tighten the muscles to improve the appearance of sagging skin around your cheeks and jawline, removing any double chin and jowls.
  • Short scar or MACS facelift – this option has a quick recovery while also giving you a long-lasting result. It also has the benefit of leaving you with an exceptionally natural-looking appearance.
  • Mini facelift – clients with the early loss of skin elasticity who are experiencing signs of ageing such as jowls, loss of volume and wrinkles can benefit from a mini facelift that focuses on the lower part of the face.
  • Full facelift with neck lift – by combining your facelift with a neck lift, your surgeon can also tighten the neck’s appearance and remove any excess fat from this area.

getting ready for your facelift

Our friendly team ensures you have all the necessary information and looks after you at every step.

pre-op assessments and advice

Our dedicated team will give you tailored advice to follow before your facelift surgery.

Leading up to your procedure, we will:

  • Encourage you to talk to us if you have any questions
  • Give you information at a pre-op meeting with your surgeon
  • Send you instructions before you come in for your facelift
  • Arrange your pre-operative assessments, which include MRSA swabs
  • Provide medication advice – we will advise you about medications you are taking or may wish to take in preparation for your facelift
  • Provide advice if you are a smoker or use nicotine patches or gum. You must stop at least four weeks before and after the procedure because nicotine products can lead to a post-operative chest infection.

preparing for your hospital stay

  • You shouldn’t eat or drink anything six hours before a general anaesthetic and surgery – your consultant will give you clear instructions to follow.
  • You can have a small glass of clear water up to two hours before your admission time, but it must not include any juice, cordial or flavouring.
  • We suggest you arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital the day after your facelift, as you won’t be able to drive.

what to bring with you on the day:

  • Any medications you’re taking
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Something to read
  • Toiletries.

face lift surgery

We have a safety-first approach and only select cosmetic surgeons holding the FRCS (Plast) qualification.

at the hospital

Your facelift will take place in a CQC-registered hospital. Following your admission, the surgical team will get you ready for your surgery:

  • Your surgeon will meet with you to answer any concerns you may have, take pre-operation photographs, and mark up your face ready for surgery.
  • You will also see your anaesthetic before the procedure and can ask questions regarding your general anaesthetic.

facelift – what happens?

Facelift surgery usually takes around three hours, but some more complex procedures can take longer. They are performed under a general anaesthetic, with a local anaesthetic infiltration to make you comfortable after the procedure. Our surgeons apply light facial dressings with a thicker bandage dressing over the top to reduce swelling and bruising in the first 24 hours. Surgical techniques differ depending on the type of facelift you are having:

  • SMAS facelift – the surgeon tightens the underlying SMAS muscle and membrane, lifting and trimming the excess skin. If combined with a neck lift, an incision will also be made under the chin, and the muscles may be tied together to smooth their appearance. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision around the ears, and in some cases, a temporary drain is placed under the skin behind the ear following the surgery to remove excess fluid. However, this is usually unnecessary. If a drain is used, it is removed the day after your surgery.
  • Deep-plane facelift – the surgeon removes excess skin, lifts the muscles and skin together and elevates the skin into a more youthful position. Incisions are made either inside or in front of the ear, extending along the natural crease behind the earlobe.
  • Short scar or MACS facelift – an incision is made in the natural skin crease in front of the ear and into the hairline just above the ear. Looped sutures are then used to lift the deeper facial tissues, and excess skin is removed with no tension in the skin, creating a natural appearance. Extra volume can also be added to the cheek area using fat transfer.
  • Mini facelift – by focusing only on the lower part of the face, this surgery leaves a slightly smaller scar line than a full facelift and has a shorter downtime.
  • Full facelift with neck lift and liposuction – deeper layers of the face are tightened, repositioned and ‘lifted’. As well as the facelift, muscle tightening and liposuction to the neck enhance the effect. In addition to the light facial dressing, a soft neck garment is also applied.

after your face lift

Everyone at The Levant Clinic is committed to delivering outstanding patient care.

getting home

A facelift typically requires an overnight stay in the hospital. You’ll be discharged the following day after your surgeon has removed your outer layer bandage. A friend, family member or taxi can take you home, as you won’t be able to drive.

outstanding aftercare

At The Levant Clinic, our surgical aftercare is excellent.

recovery timeline

Although everyone is different, here’s a guide to facelift recovery:
same day
  • You will stay in the hospital overnight.
following day
  • Before you are discharged from the hospital, your surgeon will remove the heavier bandage dressing and drain (if used), leaving the lighter facial dressing in place. If you have had liposuction to the neck, your neck garment will stay in place.
  • You can shower.
first two weeks
  • Light face dressings are worn for 10 days; your surgeon will remove them at your first follow-up consultation.
  • It is usual to feel sore and tender after your facelift, but the pain relief we prescribe will reduce any discomfort.
  • You’ll have some swelling and
  • When sleeping, you should elevate your head and sleep on your back, as this will help your recovery and swelling.
  • We encourage you to mobilise as much as possible but suggest you avoid strenuous activity.
  • You may feel more tired than usual, so it’s advisable to have someone assist you at home.
  • You may want to recuperate for one to two weeks before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.
two weeks and beyond
  • Facelifts will usually take four to six weeks to heal, and you can expect some residual bruising.
  • Stitches dissolve, so they don’t need to be removed.
  • You can return to driving when you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually from three weeks.
  • Short-haul flights can be taken after four weeks.
  • Back to normal activities, including exercise at six weeks.
  • Neck garments are removed at six weeks for a facelift combined with a neck lift and liposuction.
  • Long-haul flight at six weeks.
  • You’ll see the full results of your facelift in three-to-six months.
  • Keep your scars out of direct sunlight for 12 months.

You can exercise six weeks after your facelift.

Most patients take one to two weeks to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.

Your outer garment is removed the day after your surgery, and the lighter facial dressings are removed by your surgeon 10 days after your facelift. If you have had liposuction to your neck, you will wear a neck garment for the first six weeks after your procedure.

You can start driving once you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually about t weeks after the procedure.

You’ll need a week’s grace for any travel. We advise waiting four weeks before boarding a plane – and up to six weeks for a long-haul flight.

With a facelift, you can expect to see the full results in three to six months.

The scarring is usually minimal and runs in front of the ear and behind it. The scars settle well over time and pale after 12 months following surgery. They fade very well. Our experienced surgeons pride themselves on creating a youthful appearance that avoids visible scars or tell-tale signs that you have had surgery.

In your initial consultation, you will have time to discuss your concerns, find your options and consider which approach will be most suitable for you.

It is always a good idea to have a list of questions to ask in advance. But we understand that there’s often much to discuss. So, if you forget to ask a question in the consultation, you can contact our dedicated team, who can return to your surgeon and get the answer. Questions you may want to consider are:

  • Is a facelift right for me?
  • What surgical technique is recommended for me?
  • How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • What will I need to do to get the best results from my facelift?
  • Do you have before and after photos I can look at for this procedure?

Facelifts are relatively low risk when being carried out by a qualified plastic surgeon, but there are possible complications. These include bleeding beneath the skin (haematoma), numbness, infection, seroma (fluid collection), bruising, delayed healing, facial weakness and venous thromboembolism. Your surgeon will explain the risks and complications associated with your operation in more detail during the consultation.

The Levant Clinic surgeons are General Medical Council (GMC) accredited. They have been selected for their high skills, years of cosmetic surgery experience and professional plastic surgery qualification – FRCS (Plast). We take the utmost care to ensure that any risks are minimised.

The results of facelifts typically last 5 to 10 years, but every patient is different. You can do things to help maintain the facelift’s effects, including a healthy lifestyle and a good skincare routine. As the ageing process continues, you may choose to keep your youthful appearance with aesthetic and cosmetic treatments.

By tightening the skin, smoothing lines and wrinkles, and tackling jowls, a facelift gives you a rejuvenated and fresher appearance. We aim to provide you with a more youthful, natural look, and on average, our clients say they feel more confident and look 10 years younger.

There are several reasons people may choose to have a facelift, including:

  • The appearance of your face is affecting your confidence
  • You want to look more youthful and refreshed
  • You would like a smooth, form jawline without jowls
  • You want to improve the volume in your face
  • You have loose skin, wrinkles, or folds in your face
  • Anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments aren’t giving you results
  • You’re looking for a more permanent solution than injectables
  • You want to lift your self-esteem
