breast reduction options

There are many different techniques, which your surgeon will discuss with you, so you are certain about the best option. Our techniques create breasts with a natural look and feel, changing your life.

  • Anchor, inverted-T or Wise-pattern breast reduction – this type of breast reduction is the most common. It’s called an inverted T or anchor, because of its shape and is popular with surgeons because of its versatility and with patients for the lift it provides.
  • Vertical or lollipop breast reduction – vertical breast reduction can be beneficial for women with medium-to-large-sized breasts as it gives a pleasing perky breast shape and projection. It also has fewer scars. That said, it’s not suitable for women whose breasts are extremely large.
  • Horizontal or modified Robertson breast reduction – this technique is suitable for a select number of clients but the downside is that it is difficult for the surgeon to reshape the breast and give it projection.
  • Free nipple graft – a technique used for very droopy breasts or clients wanting very small breasts.
  • Liposuction –  fat from the breast is removed through liposuction.  It can be carried out alongside other types of breast reduction or as an alternative to a full breast reduction. A liposuction breast reduction is rarely recommended as the benefit and results are limited.

Your four step journey

your surgeon will:

  • Look at your medical history
  • Discuss your aims and expectations

  • Talk through which technique they will use

you can expect:

  • An examination and measurement of your breasts
  • Your questions to be answered, including aftercare and how recovery works
  • Your surgeon to show you before and after photos of their work
  • To hear about the benefits of our pioneering wound closure technique
  • A clinic letter detailing your discussion with your surgeon and surgical plan.

breast reduction surgery

Safe and trusted plastic surgeons delivering outstanding results.

at the hospital

We will admit you to a CQC-registered hospital for your breast reduction.

  • Your surgeon will be there to answer any concerns you have, take photographs, and mark up your chest ready for surgery.
  • Your anaesthetist will also see you before the procedure so that you can ask them about the anaesthetic. We perform breast reductions under a general anaesthetic with a local anaesthetic infiltration to make you comfortable after the procedure.

breast reduction – what happens?

Breast reductions typically take two or three hours to perform. Your surgeon will lift the nipple, remove excess breast tissue and reshape the breast to create your desired look. Breast reductions are carried out as day cases, and you are likely to go home the same day. Our surgeons don’t use drains, which makes the recovery process easier and more comfortable. They apply dressings and place you in a post-operative support bra – there’s no need to buy one as our clinic provides it within the breast reduction package.

Surgical techniques vary depending on the type of breast reduction you are having.

  • Anchor, inverted-T or Wise-pattern breast reduction – your surgeon makes an incision around the areola, which extends down to the crease below the breast where a horizontal cut is made. It means surgeons can move skin about in a horizontal or vertical direction and remove excess breast tissue from different parts of the breast.
  • Vertical or lollipop breast reduction – your surgeon cuts around the areola and down along the centre to the bottom of the breast where they may add a horizontal incision at the crease. Although the scars are short, the skin can pucker under the breast. If it does not even out, the surgeon may need to make another incision or perform scar revision surgery.
  • Horizontal or modified Robertson breast reduction – this technique involves an incision around the areola and breast crease only, thereby creating no vertical scar.
  • Free nipple graft – the nipple is completely removed from the breast and replaced as a skin graft.
  • Liposuction – liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, lipectomy, liposculpture and ‘lipo’, is a cosmetic procedure that removes areas of fat from the breast.

after your breast reduction

The best possible aftercare with a very personal approach.

getting home

We will put you at ease by giving you post-operative advice before you leave the hospital. You’ll be discharged the same day as your breast reduction and we recommend that you arrange for a friend, family member or taxi to take you home, as you won’t be able to drive.

outstanding after-care

At The Levant Clinic, our surgical aftercare is excellent.

  • You remain under your surgeon’s direct care, with support from our dedicated team
  • We don’t pass you to a nurse for follow-up care
  • You will have a 24/7 telephone number to call if you have any questions
  • At any time, our team can put you in touch with your surgeon directly.

recovery timeline

Our expert surgeons don’t use drains, this helps to reduce downtime and complications. We will give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:
same day
  • It’s a day case so you will go home
  • You can shower – Not having a drain, combined with our special wound closuring technique, means you can shower straightaway.
first two weeks
  • How you will feel – Patients often feel sore and tender, but the pain relief we prescribe reduces any discomfort.
  • You are encouraged to move about as much as possible.
  • Sleeping – We recommend that you sleep on your back with your head elevated.
  • Movement – We advise you to mobilise as much as possible, but suggest you avoid strenuous activity.
  • Help with daily activities – You may experience fatigue during recovery, so we advise having someone to assist you with daily activities.
  • Work – Most patients take two weeks to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.
  • Follow up appointment with your surgeon.
two weeks and beyond
  • Healing – Breast reductions take about six weeks to heal.
  • Stitches dissolve, so don’t need to be removed.
  • Driving – When you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually from 2 weeks.
  • Short-haul flights can be taken after 4 weeks.
  • Back to normal activities, including exercise at 6 weeks.
  • Post-op support bra – wear for 6 weeks, except in the shower.
  • Long-haul flight at 6 weeks.
  • Results – you will notice a difference immediately, but full results will be seen after 9-12 months.
  • Follow up appointments – Regular reviews with your surgeon in the first year after your breast reduction.

You can exercise six weeks after your breast reduction.

You should wear your support bra for six weeks, apart from in the shower or bath.

You can start driving once you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually about two weeks after the procedure.

You’ll need a week’s grace for any travel. We advise waiting four weeks before boarding a plane – and up to six weeks for a long-haul flight.

You’ll notice an immediate change in the appearance of your breasts, but it will take a few months for the breasts to fully settle into their new size and shape. Once the swelling has subsided, your breasts should become softer and have a more natural appearance. This is usually about three months after the operation.

You can expect to see the full benefit of your breast reduction 9-12 months after your procedure. Your breasts will appear smaller, more youthful, firmer and lighter.

Scar positions do however vary depending on the type of breast reduction you are having, but they are normally in a shape of an anchor. They usually settle and fade to a white line within nine to twelve months. Your surgeon will discuss scarring in your consultations.

Before and after

“I would come back if I wanted another surgical procedure in the future. This surgery has been life-changing, and my life has changed positively so much in the last year. I honestly am a completely different person from who I was a year ago. I wish I did it years ago!”

frequently asked questions

We have partnered with Plim to offer tailored finance options that help you pay for your procedure – and we are clear about the costs of surgery at every stage.

Find out more about finance.

All operations involve some risk, but it’s relatively low in breast reduction surgery.

Possible complications include infection, bleeding, scarring, numbness, risk of losing the nipple areola complex, inability to breastfeed, fat necrosis (lumps in breast), T-junction delay and venous thromboembolism (VTE). Your surgeon will explain the risks and complications associated with your operation in more detail during the consultation.

At The Levant Clinic all of our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold the FCRS (Plast) qualification. We take the utmost care to ensure any complications are minimised.

In your initial consultation you will have time to discuss your concerns, find out your options and consider which approach will be most suitable for you.

It is always a good idea to have a set of the questions you may want to ask in advance. But we understand that there’s often a lot to discuss, so if you do forget to ask a question in the consultation, you can contact our dedicated team who can go back to your surgeon and get the answer for you. Questions you may want to consider are:

  • Is a breast reduction right for me?
  • What surgical technique is recommended for me?
  • How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • How can I expect my breast reduction to look over time?
  • What will I need to do to get the best results?
  • Do you have breast reduction before and after photos I can look at?

Studies have shown that breast reductions do not usually interfere with breastfeeding unless you require a free nipple graft. If you are concerned about breast feeding post-procedure then we recommend you speak to your surgeon.

Breast reductions have the highest satisfaction rates of all cosmetic surgery procedures.

You may be thinking about having a breast reduction if:

  • Your breasts are affecting your confidence
  • Your breasts are too large for your body shape
  • You have pain in your back, neck or shoulders caused by heavy breasts
  • Your breasts are causing poor posture
  • Your breasts are large and drooping
  • You find it difficult to engage in sport or social events
  • You have difficulty finding clothes that fit
  • You would like more choice of bras
  • Your bra straps are digging into your shoulders from the weight of your breasts

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, a breast reduction may be right for you.
