Tuberous breast is a congenital disorder of breast development. It becomes apparent during puberty when the breast tissue and mammary glands do not develop sufficiently, resulting in abnormal breast shape and size rather than shapely rounded breasts.

The breast tissue forms more in the nipple region (areola) than in the lower breast. The areola area becomes enlarged and puffy, and breasts often develop into a characteristic cone-like or tubular shape, sometimes with more space between the breasts than usual.

The condition may affect one or both breasts and is graded for severity according to von Heimburg’s formula from grade 1 (mild) to grade 4 (severe).

Your surgeon will come and answer any of your queries or concerns. They will take surgical photographs and mark your body ready for tuberous breast correction.

Another person who will introduce themselves before surgery is your anaesthetist. We encourage you to ask them any questions about the anaesthesia. We perform breast implant and expander insertion procedures under a general anaesthetic, with a local anaesthetic infiltration to make you comfortable afterwards.

 

tuberous breast surgery – what happens?

Typically, you will be in surgery for one or two hours and you’ll go home on the same day. Surgical techniques differ depending on the type of procedure you’re having:

  • Breast augmentation – usually takes about an hour, and you can go home the same day. By making a 4 to 4.5cm incision in your breast’s crease, you will have minimal scarring and comfortable recovery. Your surgeon creates a pocket for the implant and uses absorbable sutures to close the wound. Next, they will apply dressings and place you in a post-op support bra, which our clinic will provide.
  • Breast tissue expander – this specialised form of breast augmentation is done under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon inserts a tissue expander beneath your chest wall muscles within a pocket of tissue. They will place a valve within the breast or externally for saline to be injected once you’ve healed from surgery. The process starts after two-four weeks with a series of appointments and returns to our clinic for saline injections through the valve. We gradually increase your breast size over three to six months. The expander can be left as a permanent implant, or you may choose to swap the expander for a fixed volume (breast implant), although this is rarely required.
  • Breast uplift (mastopexy) combination – we perform mastopexies under a general anaesthetic, with a local anaesthetic infiltration to make you comfortable after the procedure. There are several breast uplift techniques, and your surgeon will advise which is best for you.

  • It’s a day case, so you will go home
  • You can shower – a special wound closure technique pioneered by one of our surgeons means you can shower immediately.
first two weeks
  • How you will feel – patients often feel sore and tender, but you’ll be prescribed pain relief to reduce any discomfort
  • Your surgeon will encourage you to move about as much as possible
  • Sleeping – sleep on your back with your head elevated, as this will help your recovery
  • Movement – we encourage you to mobilise as much as possible but suggest you avoid strenuous activity
  • Help with daily activities – you will need to organise someone to support you around your home
  • Work – you can probably return to work or similar activities in about seven days. If your job is physically demanding, it may take longer. Ask your surgeon for any medical certificates you require

  • Healing – breast augmentation and tissue expander surgery take about two weeks to heal
  • Tissue expander appointments – you’ll return to the clinic several times until your expander has increased to your desired size
  • Stitches dissolve, so they won’t need to be removed
  • Driving – when you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually from three weeks
  • Short-haul flights can be taken after four weeks
  • Back to normal activities, including exercise at six weeks
  • Post-op support bra – wear for six weeks, except in the shower
  • Long-haul flight at six weeks
  • Results – you will notice a difference when the expansion process starts. Full results will be seen from 12 weeks
  • Implant aftercare – your breast implants come with a warranty for both capsular contracture and implant rupture
  • Follow-up appointments – your consultant surgeon will review you regularly to monitor how you’re recovering.

You can exercise six weeks after your tuberous breast surgery.

Most patients take 7-10 days to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour or you have capsular contracture or rupture.
