lip lift

A lip lift procedure is a permanent way to rejuvenate the lips, making them fuller and smoother, so your face looks younger.

what are the benefits of a lip lift?

Lip lifts are a permanent alternative to lip fillers, giving you all the benefits of fuller, smoother lips without repeatedly returning for dermal filler treatment.

The lip lift procedure is ideal if you want to combat the effects of age on your lips and mouth or if you have thin or downward lips and would like them enhanced.

The benefits of a lip lift include the following:

  • A boost in confidence and self-esteem
  • Increased upper lip height and definition
  • A plumper, smoother upper lip
  • A curvaceous edge to the upper lip
  • A more youthful appearance
  • Symmetrical, balanced-looking lips
  • Permanent enhancement, unlike dermal fillers
  • Enhances the appearance of lipstick

what are the different types of lip lifts?

At The Levant Clinic, we offer several different lip lift procedures:

  • Subnasal bullhorn – for a fuller, younger smile, this popular cosmetic surgery removes a bullhorn-shaped piece of skin from the nose base. The surgeon then pulls back the skin to lift the lips.
  • Direct lip lift – or the gull-wing lip lift. This procedure involves removing a skin strip above the upper lip to define the margins of the upper lift. It may leave scars.
  • Central lip lift – for those with a thin upper lip and flattened cupid’s bow. Your surgeon will take a strip of skin below your nose, lifting the skin below it to shorten the philtrum’s length. This causes the red part of the lip to curl up. The base of the nostrils and septum is also sutured.
  • Italian lip lift – a little like the subnasal bullhorn, except the surgeon does not cut along the entire nose base. Instead, they’ll make two tiny incisions under the nose.

lip lift – what happens?

Lip lifts usually take 60-90 minutes to perform under local anaesthetic. You’ll be relaxed and comfortable but awake. If combined with another surgical procedure, such as a facelift, they will be performed under general anaesthetic and take longer.

  • Your surgeon will mark your lips and face
  • Your lips and nose area will be cleansed
  • Local anaesthesia will be administered
  • Incisions are made, and the skin excised
  • Muscle will be repaired
  • Skin will be lifted
  • Sutures to close

  • Results are immediately noticeable
first two weeks
  • Resume normal activities in 3-7 days

beyond two weeks
  • Full results are seen when the swelling and bruising subside
  • Don’t smoke for 4 weeks
  • Absorbable (dissolving) stitches melt away after 7-10 days.

You can exercise 2 weeks after your lip lift.

Most patients take 3-7 days to recover before returning to work, but this may be a little longer if your job involves manual labour.

You can start driving once you have stopped taking pain medication and can perform an emergency manoeuvre (stop), usually about 3-7 days two after your lip lift.

You can travel after your wound check, two weeks after your surgery.

Lip lifts provide immediate and permanent results. You can expect to see the full results when the swelling and wound healing has resolved at 2-3 weeks.

Scarring with a lip lift is minimal as they are hidden as much as possible under the nose and in the crease of the lip. After 12 months following surgery, the scars will settle and become paler.

“I get compliments about my lips and how much better I look and younger. It has saved me money as I don’t have to keep getting regular lip filler now.”

frequently asked questions

Lip lifts are relatively low risk when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, but no surgery is without risk.

The possible complications of a lip lift include bleeding, numbness, scarring, infection, delayed healing, and asymmetry. Your surgeon will explain the risks and complications associated with your operation in detail during the consultation.

At The Levant Clinic, all our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold the FCRS (Plast) qualification. We take the utmost care to ensure any complications are minimised.

We partner with Plim to offer tailored finance options that help you pay for your procedure – and we are clear about the costs of surgery at every stage.

Find out more information about the finance options that we offer.

In your initial consultation, you will have time to discuss your concerns, find your options and consider which approach is most suitable.

It is always a good idea to have a set of questions to ask in advance. But we understand there’s much to discuss, so you can contact our dedicated team if you forget to ask a question in the consultation. They can return to your surgeon and get the answer for you.

Questions you may want to consider are:

  • Is a lip lift right for me?
  • What surgical technique do you recommend?
  • How long a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • What can I do to get the best results from my lip lift?
  • Do you have before and after photos I can look at for this procedure?

A lip lift will be immediate and last a long time (typically 8-10 years) but not forever. It cannot stop your ageing and, in many years, it will look as it did before.

However, every patient is different. With a healthy lifestyle, an excellent skincare routine and possibly other aesthetic, cosmetic and rejuvenating treatments, the lip lift’s effects will last longer.

You can have lip filler after surgery, but it’s best to wait for 2 weeks afterwards to allow for healing. However, in all probability, you won’t need fillers after a lip lift.

Your appearance is younger with a lip lift. The procedure removes and tightens your skin, reduces creases and removes fold lines, giving you a plumper, fresher, curvy lip line to boost your self-esteem.

Many people choose lip lift surgery because:

  • It improves the volume of your lip
  • You look more youthful and refreshed
  • You feel confident wearing lipstick
  • Age has thinned your upper lip
  • Your upper lip affects your confidence
  • Your philtrum (the vertical groove above your upper lip) has elongated
  • A more permanent solution is preferred to dermal filler treatment
